Sheffield Sewing Class: Introduction to Quilting – 4 Week Course (Spread Over 8 Weeks)

£150.00
sold out

Ready to dive into the cosy world of quilting? Join me for this relaxed, beginner-friendly course where you'll learn all the essential quilting skills while making your very own small quilt — perfect as a baby quilt, lap quilt or snuggly sofa throw!

Over four fortnightly sessions, we’ll break the process down step by step — from planning your design and piecing your patchwork top, to quilting, binding and finishing. No quilting experience needed — just basic sewing machine skills and a love for fabric!

You’ll leave with a finished quilt and the skills to confidently plan and sew your own quilting projects at home.

💡 You’ll Learn:

  • How to plan a patchwork layout

  • How to cut and piece fabric accurately

  • How to make a quilt sandwich

  • Basic straight-line quilting techniques

  • How to bind and finish your quilt neatly

🧰 What’s Included:

  • 10 hours of expert tuition across 4 sessions (2.5 hours each)

  • Use of rotary cutters, rulers, and pressing equipment in class

  • A friendly, supportive group environment

  • Tea, biscuits, and plenty of encouragement!

🧵 What You’ll Need to Bring:

To make a quilt approx. 36" x 48", you’ll need:

  • Patchwork fabric: Six fat quarters or approx. 1.5m of assorted quilting cotton (100% cotton) We will be cutting 48 6.5 inch squares so you can always use an assortment of cut offs for this if you prefer.

  • Backing fabric: 1.5m of 100% cotton

  • Wadding (batting): 1.5m x 1m (low-loft cotton or poly-cotton blend works well)

  • Binding fabric: 0.5m of coordinating fabric

Don't worry if you’re not sure what to choose — just drop me an email and I can help you with your fabric choices!

This course runs over 8 weeks, giving you time between sessions to complete homework at your own pace and absorb everything you’re learning. (You’ll need to have access to a sewing machine to complete the homework)

Whether you want to make thoughtful gifts or create handmade heirlooms, this is the perfect place to start your quilting journey.

WHEN IS IT - The times and dates of the four taught sessions are:

  • Session 1 - cutting and layout - Thursday 11th September 7pm -9.30pm

  • Session 2 - Piecing together - Thursday 25th September 7pm - 9.30pm

  • Session 3 - Layering and quilting - Thursday 9th October 7pm-9.30pm

  • Session 4 - Binding and admiring - Thursday 23rd October 7pm - 9.30pm

SEWING MACHINES - Although this course requires you to have access to a sewing machine for the in-between session homework you don’t have to have a machine for the teaching sessions. If it’s difficult for you to transport your machine (or maybe you are using your friends/cousins/mother-in-laws for the in-between work), you are welcome to use one of my machines in the sessions. Just select the option to borrow one at checkout.

WHERE’S IT AT - Workshops are held in my studio at Shed 11, Unit 2, Murray Road, Greystones, S11 7GH. Spaces are limited to 6 for each workshop to ensure you get individual attention, time to ask questions and any help and support you need during the class (and the halftime biscuits go further!).
