November 2025 Next Steps: The Improvers’ Series

A sequel to my Beginners’ Series, the improvers’ series builds on your sewing skills. Delving deeper into different ways to add zips to projects, working with different types of fabrics and getting to grips with simple sewing patterns!

During the series we will make a lined zippered box pouch, a purse from a simple pattern and, in the last 2 sessions, we will use a sewing pattern to make a pair of pyjama bottoms, covering how to use a sewing pattern, cut fabric and construct a garment!

This Sheffield-based sewing class is designed to cover a range of beginners’ skills including:

  • Adding visible zips to projects

  • Sewing with a range of seam allowances

  • Changing the needle on your sewing machine

  • Sewing with curves

  • Using a printed sewing pattern

  • Sewing a garment (and all that entails!

Throughout the series you will be introduced to different skills which will then be used to complete a finished item.  Don’t worry if this is all new to you, I’ll be there to help every step of the way! All materials are provided.

SKILL LEVEL - Beginner

Session 1 - Thursday 6th November 7pm til 9pm In this session we explore different ways to work with zips in projects where the zip is visible. We will practice techniques for sewing zips and then go on to and make a zippered box pouch.

Session 2 - Thursday 20th November 7pm til 9pm In this session we will use a simple pattern to cut, interface and construct a purse. We will learn how to apply and work with interfacing and techniques around how to sew curves.

Sessions 3 and 4 - Thursday 4th December and Thursday 18th December 7pm til 9.30pm In these final 2 sessions we will use a sewing pattern to make a pair of pyjama bottoms! We will go through the whole process of measuring to get the right fit, cutting and marking your fabric and constructing the PJ bottoms. We will use the Tilly and the Buttons Jaimie pattern and you will get to keep your own copy of it so you can practice making the trousers again at home.

If you can’t make all the sessions, get in touch and I’ll see what I can do! Drop me an email here

SEWING MACHINES - Bring your own machine! Each sewing machine has subtle differences and learning on your own machine means you will build confidence using your machine and learn how to adjust its settings for different makes and purposes. Don’t worry if you don’t have or can’t bring your own machine, I have machines available for people to use during the workshops. Just select the option to borrow one at checkout.

WHERE’S IT AT - Workshops are held in my studio at Shed 11, Unit 2, Murray Road, Greystones, S11 7GH. Spaces are limited to 6 for each workshop to ensure you get individual attention, time to ask questions and any help and support you need during the class (and the halftime biscuits go further!).
