Sheffield Sewing Classes: Beginners’ Series September 2025

£160.00

Welcome to my Sheffield Sewing Complete Beginners’ Series September 2025!

If you’ve never sewn before or want to start adding to your sewing skill base, there is something in the series for you!

During the series different skills will be introduced and you will use them to create a lined tote bag, a fabric storage basket and a piped cushion cover - All materials are provided!

SKILL LEVEL - Complete Beginner - You don’t need to have ever used a sewing machine before!

This Sheffield-based sewing class is designed to cover a range of beginners’ skills including:

  • Winding a bobbin and threading your machine.

  • Sewing with a straight stitch, turning corners and using a backstitch to lock in your stitches

  • Trying out stitches and how to switch to different stitches on your machine

  • Using Interfacing

  • Sewing buttonholes

  • Inserting zips

Throughout the series you will be introduced to different skills which will then be used to complete a finished item.  All materials are provided.

The Series will run on Thursday evenings every other week, starting on Thursday 4th September. The times and dates of the sessions are:

Session 1 - Thursday 4th September 7pm - 9pm- Tote Bag

In this session we will cover how to get started with your sewing machine learning how to wind a bobbin, thread your machine and sew with a straight stitch. We will then use these skills to make a lined tote bag.

Session 2 - Thursday 18th September 7pm - 9pm - Fabric Basket

This second session will build on your skills from the first, continuing to grow your confidence in setting up your machine and sewing with a straight stitch. We will also add in the technique of using interfacing to help build stability into your projects and create a cute fabric basket.

Session 3 - Thursday 2nd October 7pm - 9.30pm - Buttoned Pouch

Session 3 is a skills practise session. We will learn about when and how to use some of the most common stitches on your sewing machine and then move on to how to change your sewing machine foot and set up your machine for sewing zips. You will then get to spend some time practising sewing them into scrap fabric. The second half of the session will have a different skills focus: learning how to sew buttonholes with your machine.

Session 4 - Thursday 16th October 7pm - 9.30pm - Piped Cushion Cover

In this final session we will pull together all the skills you have learnt to create a piped cushion cover with a zipped closure.

If you can’t make all the sessions, get in touch and I’ll see what I can do! Drop me an email here

SEWING MACHINES - Bring your own machine! Each sewing machine has subtle differences and learning on your own machine means you will build confidence using your machine and learn how to adjust its settings for different makes and purposes. Don’t worry if you don’t have or can’t bring your own machine, I have machines available for people to use during the workshops. Just select the option to borrow one at checkout.

WHERE’S IT AT - Workshops are held in my studio at Shed 11, Unit 2, Murray Road, Greystones, S11 7GH. Spaces are limited to 6 for each workshop to ensure you get individual attention, time to ask questions and any help and support you need during the class (and the halftime biscuits go further!).
