July 2024 Next Steps: The Improvers’ Series

A sequel to my Beginners’ Series, the improvers’ series builds on your sewing skills. Delving deeper into different ways to add zips to projects, working with different types of fabrics and getting to grips with simple sewing patterns!

During the series we will make a lined zippered box pouch, a purse using heavy materials such as denim and cord and, in the last 2 sessions we will use a sewing pattern to make a pair of pyjama bottoms, covering how to use a sewing pattern, cut fabric and construct a garment!

This Sheffield-based sewing class is designed to cover a range of beginners’ skills including:

  • Adding visible zips to projects

  • Sewing with a range of seam allowances

  • Changing the needle on your sewing machine

  • Sewing with heavy duty fabrics

  • Using a printed sewing pattern

  • Sewing a garment (and all that entails!

Throughout the series you will be introduced to different skills which will then be used to complete a finished item.  Don’t worry if this is all new to you, I’ll be there to help every step of the way! All materials are provided.

Please select the session/s you would like to attend at checkout.

Session 1 - Thursday 11th July 2024 7pm til 9pm In this session we explore different ways to work with zips in projects where the zip is visible. We will practice techniques for sewing zips and then go on to and make a zippered box pouch.

Session 2 - Thursday 18th July 2024 - 7pm-9pm In this session we will use a simple pattern to cut, interface and construct a purse using heavy fabrics such as cord or denim (there will be a choice available on the evening). We will learn how to change our sewing machine needle to a heavy duty one to complete the project and cover a number of techniques for working with thicker fabrics.

SOLD OUT Sessions 3 and 4 - Thursday 25th July 2024 7pm til 9.30pm and Thursday 1st August 7pm til 9.30pm In these final 2 sessions we will use a sewing pattern to make a pair of pyjama bottoms! We will go through the whole process of measuring to get the right fit, cutting and marking your fabric and constructing the PJ bottoms. We will use the Tilly and the Buttons Jaimie pattern and you will get to keep your own copy of it so you can practice making the trousers again at home.

SEWING MACHINES - Bring your own machine! Each sewing machine has subtle differences and learning on your own machine means you will build confidence using your machine and learn how to adjust its settings for different makes and purposes. Don’t worry if you don’t have or can’t bring your own machine, I have machines available for people to use during the workshops. Just select the option to borrow one at checkout.

WHERE’S IT AT - Workshops are held in my studio at Shed 11, Unit 2, Murray Road, Greystones, S11 7GH. Spaces are limited to 6 for each workshop to ensure you get individual attention, time to ask questions and any help and support you need during the class (and the halftime biscuits go further!).
